BYD Seal

Saloon2023+

BYD Seal Design

Not the BYD Seal 6, which is sold in the UK only as a plug-in hybrid saloon and estate.

The BYD Seal Design is among the more affordable saloons in this comparison. Charging adds about 46 miles in 10 minutes in the figures shown here, below most rivals, so factor charging stops into longer journeys.

By eight years on the road it should still hold about 90% of its battery health, roughly 385 km of real-world range, which is a useful yardstick if you're buying used. What owners say: Owners rate the Seal as excellent value: equipment and performance comparable with Mercedes or BMW for far less, with no option-pack creep. Driver-assistance warnings and lane-keeping are intrusive and often need turning off at every start.

What Owners Say

Positive

Owners Love

  • Owners rate the Seal as excellent value: equipment and performance comparable with Mercedes or BMW for far less, with no option-pack creep.
  • It is quick (the Excellence especially), quiet and comfortable on long journeys, with good rear seats and space.
  • The exterior design and well-built interior impress, and owners prefer the interior to a Tesla Model 3's.

Watch Out For

  • Driver-assistance warnings and lane-keeping are intrusive and often need turning off at every start.
  • Winter range falls to about 200-250 miles, and 150 kW peak charging is only average.
  • Too many functions are in the touchscreen, which can be laggy.

Owner Tips

  • Charge to 100% when you need it: the LFP battery is designed for it.
  • Turn down the safety-system alert volume and set your preferred assists at the start of each drive.
  • Expect 20-25% less range in winter, and precondition before cold journeys.
