How it works
- Fuel · the EV's WLTP efficiency at your electricity price, against real-world mpg (brochure figures are 10-15% optimistic) at today's pump price.
- Road tax · both cars pay the £200 standard rate from year two. The difference is the first-year rate (£10 for an EV, £115 to £5,690 by CO2 band for petrol or diesel) and the £440-a-year supplement in years two to six on a car listed over £40,000, or £50,000 for an EV.
- Servicing · about 2p a mile less: no oil, less brake wear, no exhaust.
- Purchase price · the premium or saving on the day you buy.
Pump prices follow the GOV.UK weekly road fuel prices, and you can set your own under Adjust. Overnight charging is what makes the difference: see charging an EV cheaply.
What it leaves out
- Depreciation · EVs lost value faster for a while; the gap is closing. See the used prices on any car page.
- Insurance · too driver-specific to generalise.
- Finance · the figures are outright purchase prices.
- Company car tax · a much bigger saving: use the BiK calculator.
