BMW iX (2021-2025)

SUV2021-2025Discontinued

BMW iX xDrive40

The biggest caveat with the BMW iX xDrive40: its price places it at the premium end of the SUV class. It also costs more to charge than most EVs, around 2.5p a mile even off-peak.

By eight years on the road it should still hold about 84% of its battery health, roughly 261 km of real-world range, which is a useful yardstick if you’re buying used. What owners say: Owners value the spacious cabin, comfort and refinement, particularly with air suspension. The main complaint is the xDrive40’s smaller battery: owners report about 170 to 230 miles in real driving, with less in winter.

What Owners Say

Balanced

Owners Love

  • Long-term owners report few problems and minimal battery wear, including one reporting 3% after two and a half years.
  • The xDrive50 reportedly matches or exceeds its official range in summer, with fast, dependable rapid charging.

Watch Out For

  • The main complaint is the xDrive40’s smaller battery: owners report about 170 to 230 miles in real driving, with less in winter.
  • Several owners report refused iX insurance renewals or quotes with substantially higher premiums.
  • Owners report rapid tyre wear on some examples, alongside a large turning circle without rear-wheel steering.

Owner Tips

  • Inspect the tyres and check whether air suspension and rear-wheel steering are fitted.
