EV battery warranties look generous at first glance - "8 years / 100,000 miles" is the industry standard. Yet the details differ enormously when you read the small print: which runs out first, the years or the mileage? What annual mileage does that suggest? And how does the cover compare with what you actually paid?
We've compared warranty terms, battery sizes, chemistry types, and prices for every EV in the UK to identify the genuinely best and worst battery warranty deals.

The hidden metric: annual mileage allowance
An "8 year / 100,000 mile" warranty looks generous - but 100,000 miles spread over 8 years amounts to just 12,500 miles per year. The average UK driver covers about 7,400 miles/year, so most people are fine. For high-mileage drivers (company car, long commute), however, the mileage cap could run out long before the years.
These EVs have the narrowest implied annual mileage allowances:
| # | Car | Annual limit | Years | Total miles | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | MG Cyberster | 6,214 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 49,710 mi | 77kWh |
| 2 | Ford E-Tourneo Courier | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 46kWh |
| 3 | Toyota C-HR+ | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 58kWh |
| 4 | Skoda Enyaq | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 63kWh |
| 5 | Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 75kWh |
| 6 | Vauxhall Corsa | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 50kWh |
| 7 | Vauxhall Mokka | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 54kWh |
| 8 | Vauxhall Astra | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 58kWh |
| 9 | Vauxhall Combo Life | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 52kWh |
| 10 | Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica | 12,427 mi/yr | 8 yrs | 99,419 mi | 54kWh |
Best warranty value - price per warranted mile
This measure divides the car's price by its total warranted mileage. A lower figure is better - you are paying less for every mile of guaranteed battery life:
| # | Car | £/mi warranted | Price | Warranty miles | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | KGM Torres EVX | £0.06 | £36,995 | 621,371 mi | 73.4kWh |
| 2 | Dacia Spring | £0.12 | £11,990 | 100,000 mi | 24kWh |
| 3 | BYD Dolphin | £0.19 | £30,195 | 155,343 mi | 60.4kWh |
| 4 | Citroën ë-C3 | £0.20 | £19,995 | 99,419 mi | 30kWh |
| 5 | BYD ATTO 2 | £0.20 | £30,850 | 155,343 mi | 51.1kWh |
| 6 | Fiat 500e | £0.21 | £20,995 | 100,000 mi | 24kWh |
| 7 | Fiat Grande Panda | £0.21 | £20,995 | 99,419 mi | 44kWh |
| 8 | GWM ORA ORA 03 | £0.21 | £21,245 | 100,000 mi | 48kWh |
| 9 | Renault 5 | £0.23 | £22,995 | 100,000 mi | 40kWh |
| 10 | MG4 EV Urban | £0.23 | £23,495 | 100,000 mi | 42.8kWh |
Warranty by battery chemistry
Is battery chemistry linked to warranty generosity? Here is what our data reveals:
- NMC - average 8.0 years / 100,636 miles (78 models)
- LFP - average 7.9 years / 125,594 miles (36 models)
LFP batteries can withstand more charge cycles than NMC/NCA, theoretically supporting longer warranties. However, manufacturers also consider their competitive position and confidence in their thermal management systems when deciding warranty terms.
What "battery warranty" actually covers
Key small-print details that differ between manufacturers:
- Capacity threshold - most warranties guarantee retention of 70-80% of original battery capacity. Below this, they will repair or replace. At 71% capacity, a battery is technically "fine" under a 70% warranty
- Whichever comes first - "8 years or 100,000 miles" means cover ends when you reach either milestone first, rather than both
- Transferable? - some warranties pass to a second owner; others do not. This substantially influences resale value
- Conditions - most require servicing at authorised dealers, not exceeding fast-charging frequency limits, and operating within temperature ranges
Beyond warranty: expected battery life
Modern EV batteries generally last well beyond the warranty period:
- LFP batteries - 3,000-5,000 cycles to 80% capacity. With one cycle each day, that means 8-14 years of daily driving
- NMC batteries - 1,000-2,000 cycles to 80%. Still 3-6 years of daily full cycles, something most drivers do not do
- Real-world data - Tesla's impact reports have shown average battery degradation to around 88% after 200,000 miles. Consult the latest Tesla Impact Report for updated figures
- Calendar ageing - batteries also degrade slowly just sitting. Keeping charge between 20-80% and avoiding extreme temperatures helps
Battery warranty deserves a key place in your buying decision, particularly when buying used or planning long-term ownership. Use our search tools to compare, or explore the battery chemistry guide for more about what is inside the pack.
