Buying a Used MG S5 EV (2025 on): Standard vs Long Range & What to Pay

By Elace Grace··7 min read

The MG S5 EV is a compact electric SUV, marketed by MG as an SUV interpretation of the MG4. UK sales started in spring 2025 with prices of £28,495 to £33,495 (now £28,995 to £33,995), followed by substantial discounts from MG and dealers. New and ex-demo cars dominate S5 adverts. We explain the versions, warranty and its requirements, owner reports and prices to pay. You will find a print-out checklist at the end.

The short version
  • New cars are cheap: new SE Standard Range examples were listed around £19,000, against a £28,995 list price, making a new-versus-used comparison important.
  • A 2025 Trophy asks about £21,600, against £33,495 new.
  • 7-year warranty: 7 years / 80,000 miles on the car and 8 years / 100,000 miles on the battery, if serviced on time.
  • Five-star safety from Euro NCAP (2025).

Which S5 are you looking at?

  • SE Standard Range: a 49 kWh battery, roughly 211 miles WLTP and rapid charging up to 120 kW (10–80% in 24 minutes).
  • SE Long Range: 64 kWh, 170 kW rear motor, 298 miles WLTP, reaching up to 139 kW (10–80% in 28 minutes).
  • Trophy Long Range: identical powertrain with extra equipment, delivering 288 miles WLTP.

Listings call the car “MGS5”, and the battery size included in the advert title identifies which version it is. Complete specifications are on the S5 EV page.

Recalls

The government recall list recorded no S5 EV recalls in October 2026. Still check the individual car using GOV.UK’s recall checker and ask whether its software updates are complete.

Warranty

MG covers the car for 7 years or 80,000 miles from first registration and, on cars registered from 2024, the battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles. The cover transfers to you, but only if the car has been serviced by MG on time, and it is cut to 3 years / 60,000 miles on cars used for private hire.

  • Registered 2025: car covered to 2032; battery to 2033.
  • Registered 2026: car covered to 2033; battery to 2034.

Realistic range

Our estimate for a typical car of each age, from the same battery-ageing model as the rest of EVcarsguide:

CarSummerYear-roundWinter
2025 Standard Range (49 kWh)176 miles155 miles130 miles
2025 Long Range (64 kWh)247 miles217 miles183 miles

These figures assume the battery has aged like a typical car’s. Gentle driving beats them, while fast motorway driving falls short.

What owners report

Only two UK owner threads so far, so treat these as early findings. One owner reports nothing going wrong in five months and 6,000 miles, with plenty of power and a higher driving position than an MG4, but finds the official range optimistic and the car less settled in strong crosswinds and standing water. Another thread raises a real concern: the S5 relies on a camera alone (no front radar) for adaptive cruise and emergency braking, and owners report phantom braking when overtaking on bends. Try the adaptive cruise on a motorway during your test drive.

What to pay

New and ex-demo S5 stock still outnumbers used examples. These are asking prices for used cars:

CarsShare of advertsMedian askingTypical rangeMedian mileage
2026 SE Standard Range (49 kWh)11%£18,775£17,994–£19,290300
2026 SE Long Range (64 kWh)12%£20,595£20,214–£21,052403
2025 Trophy Long Range40%£21,634£20,878–£22,4917,604
2026 Trophy Long Range28%£23,100£21,680–£23,9994,000

Used or new? New and ex-demo listings were substantially below list price, around £19,000 for an SE Standard Range, £20,500 for an SE Long Range, alongside £32,100 for a Trophy. At such low new SE prices, a used SE must be clearly cheaper again to make sense. The strongest used choice is a 2025 Trophy around £21,600, around £10,000 below a new example. MG changes its own discounts frequently, so review current offers. Treat these as asking prices, not valuations.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. Which version is it (49 or 64 kWh; SE or Trophy)?
  2. Has MG serviced it on time? Can I see the record?
  3. Was it a demonstrator, a company car or a private hire car?
  4. Are the software updates done?
  5. Are both keys and the charging cable included?
