MG4 Urban Buyer’s Guide: How It Differs from the MG4, Which Version & Nearly-New Prices

By Elace Grace··7 min read

Sales of the MG4 EV Urban began in February 2026 from £23,495, placing it among the UK’s cheapest family-sized electric cars. The name is misleading: this is not an MG4 version but a separate front-wheel-drive model using a different platform, smaller LFP batteries and a standard heat pump. Used examples are just months old yet already cost substantially less than new. We explain the differences from the MG4, which version to choose, realistic range and charging, and nearly new asking prices.

The short version
  • Buy nearly new if you can: a 2026 Premium Long Range showing a couple of thousand miles is advertised around £20,000, some £8,000 under its £27,995 list price, retaining almost all of its 7-year warranty.
  • Long Range is worth it beyond local journeys, with 258 miles official range rather than 201.
  • Premium provides battery pre-heating ahead of rapid charging, useful on winter road trips, plus heated seats and steering wheel and a 360° camera.
  • It isn’t an MG4. Listings mentioning 51, 64 or 77 kWh, SE, Trophy or XPOWER refer to the other car. Read our used MG4 guide.

MG4 Urban vs MG4: two different cars

MG introduced the Urban alongside the facelifted MG4 on the same day and shared the name. Their platforms are different, as are the wheels they drive:

The Urban is slightly longer but slower, taking 0–62 mph in 9.5 seconds rather than 7.5. It also rapid-charges more slowly and has less range. In return, it costs less and includes the heat pump never offered by the MG4. MG quotes boot space up to 577 litres, including a 98-litre underfloor well. Measurement differs from the MG4’s 363 litres, so compare the cars in person. See the two side by side, or the MG4 Urban page for full specs.

Both Comfort trims include 16-inch wheels, fabric upholstery, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping and a 12.8-inch navigation screen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Premium(Long Range only) brings 17-inch wheels, heated front seats and steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat, a 360° camera, privacy glass and battery pre-heating before charging. A heat pump is fitted to every version.

Range and charging

Our estimate for a typical example uses the battery-ageing model applied throughout the rest of EVcarsguide:

CarSummerYear-roundWinter
Standard Range (43 kWh)171 miles151 miles127 miles
Long Range (54 kWh)219 miles193 miles162 miles
  • At home: the Urban accepts charging up to 11 kW on AC. Most UK homes, however, use single-phase power with a 7 kW wallbox; MG says this fills the Long Range in around 9 hours.
  • Rapid charging tops out at 87 kW (Long Range), meaning 10–80% takes roughly half an hour even at a fast charger. Adequate for occasional trips, although the MG4 charges quicker.
  • LFP batteries on every Urban are happy to be charged to 100% routinely.

Warranty

The Urban has MG’s 7-year or 80,000-mile warranty from first registration, which transfers to each new owner, and the battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles against falling below 70% of its capacity. A 2026 car is covered to 2033, the battery to 2034. It needs servicing every 12 months or 15,000 miles, on time and to MG’s schedule, to keep the warranty: check the first service has been done if a car is past its first birthday. Ex-private-hire cars get less: 3 years or 80,000 miles (5 years or 100,000 for cars registered from July 2026).

Safety

Euro NCAP gave the Urban five stars in 2025, with 87% for adult occupants, 85% for children, 85% for pedestrians and cyclists, and 80% for safety assist. No UK recalls have been issued so far; check its registration using GOV.UK’s recall checker anyway.

Owner reports

The Urban is too new to have an established track record. We found few owner discussions, so cannot yet identify recurring faults. Owner reports will be added as they accumulate. Buying nearly new with the full warranty is the safer way around this uncertainty.

Practical details

  • Towing: up to 500 kg braked or unbraked, 45 kg on the tow ball, at no more than 62 mph.
  • Tyres: 2.5 bar front and rear on either wheel size, whatever the load.
  • 12V battery: under the bonnet. MG suggests driving it (or leaving it switched on) for over half an hour a week, and disconnecting the 12V battery if it will stand for more than a month.
  • Key: a CR2032 coin cell.

What to pay

Around 70% of advertised MG4 Urbans are brand new. Used examples, all registered from late 2025 onwards, had these asking prices:

VersionShare of advertsMedian askingTypical rangeMedian mileage
Comfort Standard Range6%£17,500£16,999–£17,9951,020
Comfort Long Range10%£19,490£18,940–£21,099500
Premium Long Range84%£19,990£19,300–£20,4902,750

Most used examples are Premium Long Range Urbans, priced around £8,000 below list with only a few thousand miles covered. This substantial early depreciation is typical of pre-registered or ex-demonstrator stock. Most new adverts were at or slightly above MG’s list prices before dealer discounts. For the same £20,000 you could choose a 2025 MG4 Trophy Long Range (around £18,000, offering more range and quicker charging but no heat pump), or a 2024 MG4 XPOWER. Read our used MG4 guide.

Before you buy

  1. Confirm it is an Urban: 42.8 or 53.9 kWh, Comfort or Premium.
  2. Choose Long Range for anything beyond local driving, and Premium for rapid charging during winter.
  3. Ask to see the V5C and confirm whether this MG was pre-registered, used as a demonstrator or operated as a private-hire car.
  4. If it is over a year old, check the first service was done on time.
  5. Compare the asking price with a current discounted new-car quote, rather than list price alone, to assess the saving on this nearly-new MG.
