Buying a Used Volvo EX40 or EC40 (2024-on): Versions, the Braking Recall & What to Pay

By Elace Grace··7 min read

The electric Volvo XC40 became the EX40, while the EC40 is its lower-roofed, coupe-style counterpart, previously called the C40 Recharge. Both names changed in 2024, which makes any used EX40 or EC40 a 2024 or later car. Many examples are nearly new: a 2025 Extended Range EX40 has an asking price of around £38,000, against £39,610 new. Here we explain the versions, realistic range, the single recall and what you should pay. You’ll find a print-out checklist at the end.

The short version
  • Best value: a 2025 EC40 Extended Range priced at around £35,600 or EX40 at about £38,300: plenty of power together with the longest range.
  • Price the new car too: Volvo now lists the EX40 Extended Range at £39,610, with dealers listing new and ex-demo examples alongside used cars.
  • Check: braking software recall completion on cars built to June 2025.
  • Think twice if the most rear-seat space and boot capacity for your money come first: this compact SUV uses a petrol car’s platform.

EX40, EC40, XC40 Recharge: which is which?

Before the 2024 name change, these cars were the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. See our used XC40 Recharge guide and used C40 Recharge guide. The EX40 and EC40 share their powertrains:

The new prices are Volvo UK’s current starting prices. Trims run through Core, Plus, Plus Pro and Ultra; Black Edition models are common on the used market. Earlier Extended Range adverts say 78kWh and later ones 82kWh, quoting the same battery’s usable and total capacities respectively. Used Single Motor 69 kWh examples are rare. Full specifications are on the EX40 and EC40 pages.

Realistic range

These estimates are for a 2025 EX40 in each version, using the battery-ageing model applied throughout the rest of EVcarsguide:

CarSummerYear-roundWinter
2025 Single Motor244 miles215 miles181 miles
2025 Extended Range295 miles259 miles218 miles
2025 Twin Motor Performance270 miles238 miles200 miles

The estimates assume a healthy battery achieves about 85% of the official figure in mild weather and about 74% in winter. Owner reports were too scarce for comparison. Each EC40 version has a few more official miles than its EX40 counterpart, thanks to the lower roof.

NMC chemistry - good longevity with proper charging habits

Estimates based on battery chemistry and age. Chemistry-based estimate. Actual health varies with charging habits, climate, and usage.

Charging

Volvo quotes up to 200 kW rapid charging, with 10-80% taking about 26 minutes in the Single Motor and 28 minutes in the 82 kWh versions. For charging at home, the 11 kW on-board charger requires a three-phase supply for full speed. A normal home wallbox (7 kW) takes most of a night to charge the battery from empty to full.

The battery and its warranty

Volvo covers the battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, and the car for 3 years or 60,000 miles, both from first registration:

  • Registered 2024: car covered to 2027; battery to 2032.
  • Registered 2025: car covered to 2028; battery to 2033.
  • Registered 2026: car covered to 2029; battery to 2034.

Google built-in runs the infotainment, and the included digital services package lasts four years. New terms and fees apply after that period. Ask how much of the package remains on the car you’re considering.

Recalls

  • Braking software (R/2025/211): XC40 and C40 family cars built up to 11 June 2025, including early EX40s and EC40s. Coasting downhill in B mode or One Pedal Drive could lead to a temporary loss of braking. An over-the-air software update fixes it.

Check the specific car on GOV.UK’s recall checker and request the car’s software history from a Volvo retailer.

Safety

The XC40 earned five Euro NCAP stars in its 2018 test. The electric car has not been retested under the new names.

What owners report

There is little EX40 or EC40 owner writing to draw on: we found one detailed test-drive review. It welcomed the build quality, comfortable heated seats and smooth ride. Criticisms focused on the small, dated central screen and the transmission tunnel that reduces space in the rear middle seat, reflecting the car’s petrol origins. Earlier XC40 Recharge owners describe much the same strengths and weaknesses; see our XC40 Recharge guide.

What to pay

Around half of advertised EX40s and EC40s are brand-new or ex-demo examples. This table includes only used cars, grouped by body style, version and year of registration.

EC40 Twin Motor Performance, 20264%£43,000£40,025–£44,6124,000

These are asking prices rather than valuations. Almost every example is a low-mileage 2025 or 2026 car. Used EC40s ask less than EX40s despite costing more new, and a 2026 Twin Motor asks no more than a 2025 example. Weigh any nearly new car against a new one: Volvo’s EX40 Extended Range list price is £39,610, with further discounts often available on new cars.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. When was this car first registered, and was it previously a demonstrator or lease vehicle?
  2. Has the braking software recall been completed, and is all the software up to date?
  3. What trim and option packs are fitted? Plus Pro and Ultra include a lot of equipment.
  4. How much time remains on the Google services package?
