Used Volvo EX30 Buying Guide (2024 on): Battery Recall, Versions and Prices

By Elace Grace··8 min read

The Volvo EX30 is the brand’s smallest SUV and cheapest electric car, on sale in the UK since early 2024. Prices began at £33,795 new at launch, and used ones now ask from about £23,000. Roughly half the advertised EX30s are used; the rest are new or ex-demo. Start with the battery recall, which affects almost every used EX30. This guide explains that recall, the different versions, warranty coverage, owners’ experiences and the prices to expect. There’s also a print-out checklist at the end.

The short version
  • The big check: a battery-overheating recall covers 10,577 EX30s built up to August 2025. Charging is capped at 70% until the battery modules are inspected and replaced. Find out exactly where the car is in that process.
  • Cheap for what it is: a 2024 Extended Range asks about £25,000, and the 428hp Twin Motor Performance barely more.
  • Check new prices too: new and ex-demo Extended Range cars were advertised at about £30,800.
  • Small inside: it is a compact car with a small rear seat and boot.

Which version of the EX30 is it?

  • Single Motor: 272hp and rear-wheel drive, with a 51 kWh battery. Uncommon on the used market.
  • Single Motor Extended Range: the same motor paired with a 69 kWh battery, giving the longest range.
  • Twin Motor Performance: 428hp, four-wheel drive and the 69 kWh battery, reaching 0–62 mph in 3.6 seconds.

The launch trims were Plus and Ultra; Core and the raised Cross Country followed later. Ultra brings a 22 kW AC on-board charger (otherwise 11 kW), a panoramic roof and other additions. Full specifications appear on the EX30 page.

Recalls: read this first

From the government’s recall list (in October 2026):

  • 2026, high-voltage battery: 10,577 EX30s built from September 2023 to August 2025. There is a risk of the battery overheating. As an interim measure the maximum charge is limited to 70%, owners are advised not to leave the car charging unattended inside buildings or covered areas, and the battery modules are inspected and replaced.
  • 2024, driver display: 7,569 cars built up to April 2024 receive a software update, either over the air or through a retailer.
  • 2026, seat recliner: 1,493 cars built from November 2024 to April 2025.

For cars covered by the battery recall, the 70% charge cap reduces usable range by about 30% until repairs are complete. Ask a Volvo retailer to confirm the recall status, and request written confirmation after the battery modules have been dealt with. Check the individual car on GOV.UK’s recall checker.

Warranty

Volvo covers the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles, with the car covered for 3 years from first registration. Every used EX30 therefore still has battery cover:

  • Registered 2024: car covered to 2027; battery to 2032, or 100,000 miles if sooner.
  • Registered 2025: car covered to 2028; battery to 2033, or 100,000 miles if sooner.
  • Registered 2026: car covered to 2029; battery to 2034, or 100,000 miles if sooner.

Realistic range

Our estimate for a typical car of each age, from the same battery-ageing model as the rest of EVcarsguide, before any recall charge cap:

CarSummerYear-roundWinter
2024 Single Motor (51 kWh)171 miles151 miles127 miles
2024 Extended Range239 miles210 miles176 miles
2024 Twin Motor Performance226 miles199 miles167 miles

These figures assume a battery with typical ageing. Gentle driving exceeds the estimates, while fast motorway driving delivers less range.

What owners report

We reviewed the UK owner forums, where several points appear repeatedly in owners’ accounts:

  • Quick and well built: owners praise the performance, seats, cabin quality and ride, and find the car straightforward to park.
  • Everything is on the screen: there is neither a driver display nor a head-up display, with almost all controls on the centre touchscreen. Owners complain about this most often. Put climate, wipers and lights on auto, and save a driver profile.
  • Intrusive driver aids: many owners find lane assist and speed-limit warnings irritating; both reactivate every time the car starts.
  • Small in the back: limited rear legroom and boot space lead owners to describe it as a two-adult car.
  • Early software bugs: early cars suffered Bluetooth, key card and connectivity problems. Owners report that over-the-air updates resolved most faults while adding wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. Check that the car has up-to-date software.
  • The battery recall: affected owners report the 70% charge limit, longer journeys and delays in communication from Volvo.

For the best balance, owners recommend the Single Motor Extended Range. Find the full summary on the EX30 page.

What to pay

Used cars account for roughly half of advertised EX30s, grouped here by registration year and version:

CarsShare of advertsMedian askingTypical rangeMedian mileage
2024 Extended Range7%£24,995£22,977–£27,42013,639
2024 Twin Motor Performance7%£25,673£24,202–£27,96214,421

2026 Twin Motor Performance6%£31,989£29,992–£34,7953,000

Used or new? Volvo lists the EX30 from £33,060, although new and ex-demo examples were advertised substantially below list price (an Extended Range around £30,800). A 2024 car saves about another £6,000, but establish its battery-recall status: this affects the available range until repairs are complete. Treat these figures as asking prices, not as valuations.

Questions to ask the seller

  1. Has the battery recall work been done, and is the 70% charge cap lifted?
  2. Which version and trim is it (and does it have 22 kW AC charging)?
  3. Is the Volvo service history complete, with software updates?
  4. Was it a demonstrator or a company car?
  5. Are the key card and app access both set up and handed over?
